The Istituto Fotocromo Italiano was founded in Florence in 1928 by the engineer Vincenzo Balocchi, a well known amateur photographer and former artistic director of the Fratelli Alinari Company.
Up until 1980, the Company printed artistic editions in the old traditional method of photo-typeset or collotypes, but now use the most modern and sophisticated printing methods.
Istituto Fotocromo Italiano is led by the same family and is now in its third generation.
